Jean 24.jpg

The name might not fit the picture for many people. But to me, it does. I tried to think of another name, but I didn’t know anything about the old barn to give it another title. But when I first passed it up, I knew it would make a good black and white. And that was the first name that popped in my head. Jean. She is a dear friend of mine that favors black and white photos over any other. She also likes to have the story behind the photo. This is where I failed. I don’t know anything about the old barn and there was nobody around for me to ask. I was just riding a friend’s four-wheeler down the dirt roads and passed it up. She was the first person I thought about because I instantly wanted to take a black and white shot of it. So on my way back, I did. As far as the history of the barn, I can only imagine it was built by a rancher with heavily tanned and leathery skin, back in the days before color photography. His kids and some other family and friends probably had a hand in building it with him. I’m sure it held many bails of hay and sheltered a few animals during bad or hot weather. It didn’t appear to be in use anymore but you can bet there is a little wildlife in there using it as their home. At the time it was built, those trees were probably nothing more than shrubs. I’m even thinking that the dirt road was not there until well after the barn was built. And even the fence looks too close to have been there from the beginning. I’m sure the original owner is no longer alive and the current family members that own it can’t find it in their hearts to tear down that old piece of family history. Maybe next time I’ll stop and find someone to ask.
